HOW I MAKE TALLOW BALM

This is by far one of my most popular creations! It is quite simple to make, and if you are a curious and crafty person, I would love to demystify the process of making it!

And if you love tallow balm but don’t want to have a mess in your kitchen, I do sell it on my website and ship within the US! It makes a great pregnancy and postpartum gift- wonderful for stretch marks, baby bums and cracked and irritated nipples during the first few days of breastfeeding.

THE INGREDIENTS:

I use all organic ingredients. This is because Everything we put on our skin soaks directly into our bloodstream. When we are pregnant and postpartum and rubbing things on our babies’ bodies, it’s really important to use as few and as high-quality ingredients as we can find.

Tallow contains vitamins A, D, K and E which helps our bodies heal, regenerate and grow healthy, nourished cells. I use locally sourced, grass-fed unrefined tallow (from THIS farm) so it contains no toxic additives and is easily absorbed and assimilated into skin. Be aware, tallow does have its own scent, and each batch is a little bit different in consistency and smell.

I use organic, cold-pressed olive oil and a FEW drops of essential oil, so I consider this a safe thing to use on stretched pregnant bellies, raw, chapped nipples, red and inflamed baby bums and any other crevice that needs a little love. This is also excellent on psoriasis, eczema, scars, burns, scrapes…you name it.

I also sell an unscented batch with no essential oil- just tallow and olive oil.

THE PROCESS:

I order the suet from a local farm (THIS FARM) in Glen Arm, Maryland. This is what it looks like when it arrives!

I then render the suet into tallow, which means I cook it for a long time on a low temperature to ooze the magical qualities out of the fat.

I strain it.

I let it cool.

I then add olive oil, gently heating the two together in a double boiler.

I let them cool.

I add essential oils.

I whip them up!

I lovingly dollop into jars.

I add stickers.

I slather it on everyone in my house Warning if you have pets they may want to lick this off you! Yum!
